History

  • Since its inception in 1951, Energoprojekt has evolved into a complex business entity, integrating 9 companies in Serbia along with over 20 subsidiaries and joint venture companies abroad.
  • Energoprojekt designed the majority of hydroelectric power plants (HEP) in the country – from HEP Sokolnica, generating 3.6 MW of power on Timok river, to HEP Djerdap, generating 2,100MW of power. From its inception until 2009, Energoprojekt has designed or built more than 40 HE plants on the territory of former Yugoslavia, as well as abroad.
  • In the first decade of its operations, Energoprojekt designed first thermal power plants (TPP) in SFRY – Kostolac, Morava, Kolubara and Kosovo – before building TPP “Nikola Tesla” in Obrenovac in 1970, which generates more than 1/3 of the entire electric energy output of Serbia – 3,015MW.
  • During this period, Energoprojekt started its initial projects abroad – hydro-technical and irrigation systems in Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Pakistan, Burma, India, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, Liberia.
  • During the 60’s, Energoprojekt set up offices, subsidiaries and joint ventures in numerous countries. In this period, Energoprojekt built more than 60 water processing facilities of various types and capacities, 24 concrete dams of different types and sizes, 34 embankment dams, 25 thermal power plants, more than 50 factories, over 30 industrial facilities, several thousand residential apartments and hundreds of residential buildings.
  • During the 70’s, Energoprojekt embarked upon major projects worldwide, important both in terms of their complexity as well as in terms of the individual contracts’ value.
  • Energoprojekt has gained new projects and expanded to new markets abroad. It has designed and constructed capital projects in Uganda, Botswana, Peru, Kenya, Iceland, Central African Republic, Zaire, Gabon, Panama, Libya and in numerous other countries where it was already present.
  • During this period, the prestigious American magazine “Engineering News Record” always included Energoprojekt among its top performers in traditional annual reviews. In 1980, Energoprojekt was ranked as 6th among the consulting companies, 20th among the engineering companies, and 27th among investment project contractors.
  • In its fourth decade of operations, Energoprojekt intensified its activity in the OPEC member countries: Iraq, Kuwait, Iran, Libya, and Nigeria.
  • During the 90’s, due to the breakup of former Yugoslavia and the political, economic and financial isolation of Serbia, as well as result of the Gulf War, some of the international projects had to be discontinued while others were continued but with greatly elevated costs of operations. Energoprojekt’s network of foreign subsidiaries, branch-offices and joint ventures allowed it to retain its presence and activity in its established markets, as well as to embark on projects in new ones, such as Russia, Kazakhstan and China.
  • In September of 1998, Energoprojekt began the transformation of its ownership structure from a socially owned company to a joint-stock company.
  • At the beginning of the third millennium and in the sixth decade of its operations, Energoprojekt continues to work intensively at home and abroad. Main projects are in Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Algeria, Peru and Qatar.
